Day Trips from Vienna

Home to Freud, opera, classical music and associated with plenty that just screams “fancy,” Vienna is one of the most elegant cities on the planet. The thing is, it’s still a city. And sometimes you just need to get out of the concrete jungle (as beautiful as this one happens to be) and explore what’s beyond the hustle and bustle.

Here are some worthy options if you’re contemplating your choices for day trips from Vienna.

Liechtenstein Castle

A mere 20 minutes outside of Vienna’s city centre will find you in the wee little town of Molding, known for that behemoth on the edge of town — Liechtenstein Castle. Just don’t confuse it with the taller, cliff-hugging Lichtenstein astle in neighbouring Germany. Built in 1130 as a tribute to the then current Prince, this sprawling castle housed the royals for over 200 years. It’s now privately owned (one of the few in Austria) and a guided tour takes about 50 minutes.

Salzburg Austria at night, day trips from Vienna

Consistently lauded as one of the most picturesque cities in the world (believe me — it is!), Salzburg really deserves more than just a day. But if you’re intent to see it in one, leave early — it takes about 2 and a half hours to get here from Vienna. Alternatively, you could conceivably book a flight that would get you there in about 45 minutes (check for flights from Vienna.) Once you do make your way there, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to things to. Salzburg’s beautiful old town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) competes with attractions such as its imposing fortress, and the nearby Sound of Music sites for your time.

Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava Slovakia

One of the great things about Europe is that everything is so close — and that goes for countries too. The Slovakian capital of Bratislava is only an hour train ride from downtown Vienna, so if you’d like to add another country to your bucket list, you may want to consider this day trip. Bratislava’s Old Town is grittier than Salzburg’s, but its astonishingly beautiful nonetheless. A short public bus ride will take you to Delvin Castle on the city’s outskirts, and the views from the these ruins are well worth the short climb — it’s unparalleled in this region.

What other day trips from Vienna do you know about?

Mind-boggling New York Attractions

While some people prefer to fritter away their vacations on a beach, sunscreen in one hand, margarita in the other, there are other options out there for those that prefer a bit more mental stimulation during their time away from work. New York is one such place where you can put your brain to work on your holidays.

So get your mental floss ready, and your creative juices flowing with some of these mind-boggling New York attractions.

Escape the Room NYC

While it may just look like a plain run-of-the-mill room, this attraction is actually a puzzle that will put your problem-solving abilities to their ultimate test. Participants have 60 minutes to scan the room for hidden objects to aid in their escape. The clues will lead you and your friends to solve the puzzle and earn their freedom to “Escape the Room.” It costs about 25 dollars per person, but the reviews are through the roof for this attraction. (Note: the escape is NOT through the roof though — it’s not THAT easy!)

Watson’s Scavenger Hunt

New York City

If you’re looking for a novel way to see the sights during your New York holidays, then testing your wits with a scavenger hunt may be the answer. You don’t collect rare and unusual things with on this hunt though, you find the answers to a series of sometimes tricky, sometimes hilarious questions designed to get you to out and about in the city. You’ll visit museums, get to roam neighbourhoods, and have an overall greater appreciation for this magnificent city.

New York Hall of Science

I know what you’re thinking — “Great, another science museum.” But the New York Hall of Science (or NYSCI for short) is a little different than most. While it does offer the usual array of exhibits (over 450), interactive displays, and plenty of workshops explaining science, technology, math, and engineering — it’s the unique participation activities that sets this museum apart. Their extensive calendar of events offers everything from crayon making, to learning parkour, to making your own environmentally friendly tote bag.

So next time you’re in New York City, check out some these less widely known attractions — your brain will be happy you did.

A Guy’s Weekend in Vegas Baby!

Home of the bachelor party, the quickie wedding (and the even “quickier” divorce), there’s a reason the town’s motto is “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” If you’re heading for an unabashed weekend (or week, or month, or…you get the picture) of debauchery with your buddies, you’ll want to check out some of these activities fit for the most memorable of guy’s weekends.

Ladies and gentleman (but mostly gentleman), we give you the Travel Globe Guide to a Guy’s Weekend in Vegas.

This fixture just off the infamous is the starting point for many a night to remember, and plenty more forgotten nights. It’s the quintessential German brew haus, with larger than life steins, free-flowing beers, and buxom bar maids as far as the eye can see. There’s even something called a “Jagermeister Spanking” that’s sure to get you off your butt.

Dig This

DIg This Las Vegas

If you’re chained to a cubicle from 9 to 5 for your regular job and have perhaps dreamed of one day getting your hands dirty by dabbling in construction, then check out Dig This. You get to push stuff around by driving a bulldozer, or use a digger to excavate a an empty construction lot, and even play a spirited game of “Digger Basketball.” It’s Bob the Builder for big boys.

Sky Combat Ace

If you count Top Gun as one of your favourite movies, or plane-spotting as one of your preferred hobbies, Sky Combat Ace is definitely a bucket list experience you’ll never forget. Flying with a real fighter pilot, you’ll be shown various aerial maneuvers such as roll, four-point turn, loops, and spins. Best of all, once your pilot shows you how it’s done, you get to try the moves yourself. You’ll also get to speeds of up to 7 Gs. Although the experience can be pricey, for a lot of chaps it winds up being a lot cheaper than a night at the slots.

Cirque du Soleil

ZARKANA Cirque du Soleil

I know what you’re thinking – what’s a visit to Cirque du Soleil doing in a guy’s weekend round-up? The thing is, one show in particular is a metaphor for Vegas (and in particular a night out in Vegas) itself. Zarkana at Aria Las Vegas starts out as an abandoned stage, it slowly becomes populated with a motley crew of absurd characters, it turns mind-blowingly crazy and chaotic, and ends up being the most memorable of celebrations. And isn’t that what Vegas is all about?
