Fun and Free Things to do in Rome

Pantheon ray of light, black and white, Rome Italy
The old saying goes that when you are in Rome you should do as the Romans do, but if you are on something of a limited budget, then you may want to ask the Romans how much it costs to do what they do. You could of course just skip that and check out some of the many free things that are available in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some things to do in Rome that won’t cost you a penny, but are still fun.

Trevi Fountain

If you have been captivated by your trip the Eternal City and are determined to return again, then you have to stop by the Trevi Fountain. It truly is a glorious sight and is free to visit, but if you want to guarantee a return to Rome, then you are going to have to toss 3 coins into the fountain. Legend has it that the gift of those coins will absolutely guarantee a return visit.

Bocca della Verita

The locals believe that the fountain always tells the truth, but if you want to test your own honesty, you can do so at the Bocca della Verita, which translates to “the mouth of truth.” Legend states that if you stick your hand in the mouth of this sculpture and tell a lie, you will pull out nothing but a handless stump. Another place that doesn’t cost anything, but it can still leave you a little shorthanded if you aren’t careful.

Pantheon & St. Peter’s Basilica

You can’t take a step outside any Rome hotels without stumbling into history. The folks over at expedia.co.uk/hotels have a fine selection of hotels within walking distance of the next couple of buildings you have to check out. The magnificent columns that beckon you to the entrance of the Pantheon really are something to behold, as is the interior, which is always free to visit. The other building that is a must see, and which also happens to be free, is St. Peter’s Basilica which is considered to be the world center for the Catholic Church. Once inside, be sure to rub St. Peter’s feet for luck.

Spanish Steps

You might need some of that luck if you hope to make it all the way to the top of the Spanish Steps. Not only are they the widest steps in Europe, they are also the longest, so you may need to take a little break while you walk them. If you do feel like spending a little money at the Spanish Steps, then you might want to consider giving it to one of the many portrait artists that gather there.

Vatican Museum

There are places in Rome where time seems to have stood still, but of you get your timing right, you just might be able to visit the Vatican Museum for free. The last Sunday of every month is reserved for free visitors, making it the best time for those on a budget to check it out. The truth is that every street in Rome has something wonderful to see and by simply taking a free stroll, you will uncover some great sights that are a little off the beaten path.
